He served as the head football coach at Troy State University—now known as Troy University—from 1972 to 1973, compiling a record of 11–7–2. He was also the athletic director at Troy State from 1972 to 1974. Jones was hired at Troy State after coaching the freshman football team at Auburn University for six seasons.[1] Jones was a native of Tallassee, Alabama. He played high school football for coach J.E. "Hot" O'Brien and was part of the Tallassee Tigers' legendary 57-game unbeaten streak (56 wins, 1 tie). He died at his home in Lowndesboro, Alabama on July 14, 2014, at the age of 90.[2] Head coaching recordCollege{{CFB Yearly Record Start | type = coach | team = | conf = | bowl = | poll = no }}{{CFB Yearly Record Subhead| name = Troy State Trojans | conf = Gulf South Conference | startyear = 1972 | endyear = 1973 }}{{CFB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | year = 1972 | name = Troy State | overall = 4–5–1 | conference = 2–3–1 | confstanding = 5th | bowlname = | bowloutcome = | bcsbowl = | ranking = no | ranking2 = no }}{{CFB Yearly Record Entry | championship = conference | year = 1973 | name = Troy State | overall = 7–2–1 | conference = 6–1 | confstanding = 1st | bowlname = | bowloutcome = | bcsbowl = | ranking = no | ranking2 = no }}{{CFB Yearly Record Subtotal | name = Troy State | overall = 11–7–2 | confrecord = 8–4–1 }}{{CFB Yearly Record End | overall = 11–7–2 | bowls = no | poll = no | polltype = }} References1. ^{{cite news |author= |date=February 1, 1972 |title=Troy State Names Jones As Head Coach |url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1891&dat=19720201&id=P8sfAAAAIBAJ&sjid=1dcEAAAAIBAJ&pg=4406,231270&hl=en |newspaper=The Gadsden Times |location=Gadsden, Alabama |access-date=March 28, 2016 }} {{Troy Trojans athletic director navbox}}{{Troy Trojans football coach navbox}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Jones, Tom}}2. ^{{cite news |author= |date=July 16, 2014 |title=Former Troy State University head coach, Auburn assistant coach Tom Jones dies |url=http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2014/07/former_troy_university_head_co.html |newspaper=AL.com |publisher=Alabama Media Group |location= |access-date=March 28, 2016 }} 10 : Year of birth missing|1920s births|2014 deaths|Auburn Tigers football coaches|Troy Trojans athletic directors|Troy Trojans baseball players|Troy Trojans football coaches|Troy Trojans football players|Auburn University alumni|Sportspeople from Tallahassee, Florida |
