}}Toxorhynchites (Toxorhynchites) splendens is a species of non-hematophagous (not blood-feeding) mosquito belonging to the genus Toxorhynchites. It is widely used as a predator to control dengue mosquitoes.[1] DistributionIt shows nearly a cosmopolitan distribution throughout the Old World, except African continent both through human influences and natural methods. It is found in India, Sri Lanka[2] Malaysia, Thailand, New Guinea, Fiji Islands, Philippines, Rotuma Island.[3] ImportanceThe large expansion is may be due to naval transport of larva from one place to another. In 1934, these mosquitoes were introduced to Fiji as a method of biological control of Aedes polynesiensis, and in India and Malaysia to control Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus who are prominent vectors of many human diseases.[4] They prefer to consume eggs and larva Aedes aegypti and Anopheles stephensi.[5][6] Alphamethrin, deltamethrin, Malathion can be used to control the mosquito.[7]References1. ^{{cite web | url=http://www.mosquitocatalog.org/taxon_descr.aspx?ID=16744 | title=minimus (Theobald) | publisher=Systematic Catalog of Culicidae |accessdate=3 February 2017}} 2. ^{{cite web | url=http://thakshana.nsf.ac.lk/slstic/NA-81/NA_81.pdf | title=An annotated checklist of mosquitoes of Sri Lanka | publisher=Man and Biosphere Reserve of Sri Lanka | accessdate=3 February 2017 | deadurl=yes | archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20160625065751/http://thakshana.nsf.ac.lk/slstic/NA-81/NA_81.pdf | archivedate=25 June 2016 | df= }} 3. ^{{cite web | url=http://www.catalogueoflife.org/col/details/species/id/1e652c06e17bf3a0de3f82c06d333eca | title=Species Details : Toxorhynchites splendens (Wiedemann, 1819) | publisher=Catalogue of Life |accessdate=3 February 2017}} 4. ^{{cite web | url=http://www.cabi.org/bni/FullTextPDF/2000/20003030873.pdf | title=The biology of Toxorhynchites mosquitoes and their potential as biocontrol agents | publisher=Department of Biological Sciences, University of Dundee, UK |accessdate=3 February 2017}} 5. ^{{cite journal | title=Risky Behaviors: Effects of Toxorhynchites splendens (Diptera: Culicidae) Predator on the Behavior of Three Mosquito Species | journal=Journal of Insect Science | volume=15 | pages=128 | publisher=jinsectscience | doi=10.1093/jisesa/iev115 |pmid = 26386041| pmc=4626665 | year=2015 | last1=Zuharah | first1=Wan Fatma | last2=Fadzly | first2=Nik | last3=Yusof | first3=Nur Aishah | last4=Dieng | first4=Hamady }} 6. ^{{cite web | url=http://www.tm.mahidol.ac.th/seameo/1992-23-3/1992-23-3-450.pdf | title=CANNIBALISM AND CARNIVORY IN TOXORHYNCHITES SPLENDENS (DIPTERA: CULICIDAE) | publisher=Vector Control Research Centre |accessdate=3 February 2017}} 7. ^{{cite journal | url=http://europepmc.org/abstract/med/9031419 | title=Toxicity of insecticides to Toxorhynchites splendens and three vector mosquitos and their sublethal effect on biocontrol potential of the predator. | journal=The Southeast Asian Journal of Tropical Medicine and Public Health | volume=27 | issue=1 | pages=154–159 |accessdate=3 February 2017| last1=Das | first1=P.
