}}Twinkl Educational Publishing is an online educational publishing house, producing teaching and educational materials[1][2] for markets including primary,[3] and secondary schools, parents[4][5] home educators,[6] childminders, English as a second language, special educational needs and disabilities, adult education,[7] and international markets.[8] Twinkl was founded by Jonathan Seaton[9][10] and Susie Seaton. Its headquarters are in Sheffield, England[11][12]

History

Twinkl was founded by Jonathan Seaton[13] and Susie Seaton (a former primary school teacher) in February 2010. While working as a teacher, Susie had difficulty sourcing materials for her lessons, which led the couple to begin creating their own resources and publishing these online. Twinkl now creates digital teaching materials for educators worldwide.[14]

The company moved to its current HQ in Sheffield, England in 2014.[14] {{As of|2018}} the company has over 480 team members in 15 locations around the world. In 2017, Twinkl opened a second office[15] in Wollongong, Australia.[16]

Partnerships

The company publishes material relating to other companies. These have included Pritt,[17] The Guardian,[18] Avery,[19] The Vegan Society,[20] Chatsworth House,[21] Holocaust Memorial Day Trust,[22] Disasters Emergency Committee,[23] British Dyslexia Association,[24][25] War Child,[26][27] YPO,[28] Stablo, Geographical Association,[29] Voluntary Service Overseas, Red Start,[30] Mr. Men and Little Miss,[31] Gratnells,[32], St John Ambulance,[33] Bloodhound SSC,[34] UNICEF UK[35] and teaching resources for BBC Supermovers,[36] BBC Springwatch,[37] and BBC Children in Need.[38][39][40]

Twinkl is also working with the BBC[41] to support their BBC Teach Live Lessons series, including World Book Day and Blue Planet Live Lessons.[42]

Twinkl has created resources in partnership with the UK Parliament[43] to help introduce children to the work carried out in the House of Lords and House of Commons.

Twinkl has produced teaching resources in support of Finn's Law, a specific law against injuring police animals.[44][45]

In 2017, Scottish endurance athlete Mark Beaumont's attempt to cycle around the world in 80 days was tracked on Twinkl's website.[46]

Charity

Working with the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust in 2017, Twinkl created an assembly pack about Anne Frank to encourage schools to take part in Holocaust Memorial Day on 27 January.[47][48]

The company has created a range of resources in collaboration with Unicef,[49] including materials for the Unicef Playground Challenge, which encouraged children to design and take part in a playground obstacle course or activity to raise money as part of Unicef Soccer Aid 2018.[50]

In 2018, Twinkl became the school partner for the BBC Children in Need charity.[51] As a result of this partnership, Twinkl created a Pudsey Bear storybook and distributed this to more than 24,000 UK schools.[52][53]

In the same year, Twinkl collaborated with Stonewall (the Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender rights charity) to produce a new LGBT Best Practice Guide for LGBT inclusion in UK primary schools.[54]

In 2018 Twinkl also worked with War Child on its ‘Learn to Live’ campaign,[55] which raises awareness of the importance of education and mental health provisions for children affected by war.[56] War Child appealed to children around the UK to write to a letter to the prime minister, asking the government to give more funding to provide education, mental health and emotional support to children across the globe.[57] Twinkl produced resources to be used in this campaign, including a persuasive writing resource pack.[58]

Later in 2018 Twinkl collaborated with the Disasters Emergency Committee to produce resources about the earthquake and tsunami that struck the Indonesian island of Sulawesi on 28 September 2018. This included news articles that provided information about the disaster and DEC’s appeal[59] to help the survivors.[60]

Awards

In 2016 Twinkl won an Education Resources Award.[61]  

In December 2017, newsletter The Assignment Report named Twinkl their UK Education Company of the Year 2017.[62]

In April 2018, Twinkl received The Queen's Award for Enterprise[63] for the company's work in international trade.[64] In November 2018 Twinkl won a Yorkshire Post Business Award.[65]

Later in 2018 Twinkl received three Sheffield Business awards, Employer of the Year, Business of the Year and Excellence in International Trade,[66][67] and the Variety Yorkshire Business Award for Stand-out Small Business.[68]

In the same year, the company's CEO, Jonathan Seaton, was named a regional winner of an EY Entrepreneur of the Year North award.[69][70] He was also included in the LDC list of Top 50 Ambitious Business Leaders, 2018.[71]

Augmented reality

Twinkl has created a number of products using augmented reality (AR).[72] The first was the Twinkl Ages: York application, which shows the city of York in 3D as it changed from 70 to 1400 AD.[73]

In September 2018 Twinkl created the first educational game using AR for multiple players. The game, ‘Little Red Coding Club’, teaches children to code.[74][75]

In December 2018 Twinkl introduced an online catalogue of digital models created using technology from Apple called AR Quick Look.[76]
