Ultracore, originally known as Hardcore, is a video game originally developed by Digital Illusions CE AB in 1994 for the Amiga, Sega Genesis, and Sega CD consoles, but was never released for those formats. The game was salvaged by publisher Strictly Limited and will be released for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita systems in April 2019, as well as the Mega SG system.

Gameplay

Ultracore is a run and gun "Eurostyle 2D shooter" that requires fast reflex action. The player collects weapon power-ups while moving through levels.{{r|Polygon: announce}}

Development

Digital Illusions, now known as EA DICE, developed Hardcore for the Amiga, Sega Genesis, and Sega CD consoles in 1994. Despite being nearly complete,{{r|Polygon: announce}} the game's publisher, Psygnosis, ultimately canceled the game's release in anticipation of poor sales. With the then-upcoming release of the 32-bit PlayStation console, Psygnosis expected sales for 16-bit Sega Genesis games to wane. Before its cancellation, Hardcore appeared in video game magazines. A few videos of its gameplay also leaked over the years.[1] Two DICE founders presented a demo of the game at a 2010 Commodore enthusiast exposition.{{r|Polygon: announce}}

In August 2018, the German game publisher Strictly Limited announced plans to finish and release the game. The small developer, which includes a co-founder and staff from Digital Illusions, is using an original Sega development kit to finish the production. Afterwards, the retro game is planned to be ported for release on modern PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita consoles. Sony, makers of the PlayStation, own the Psygnosis back catalog. The team will attempt to add tank levels that were missing from the game.[2] Later, retro console developer Analogue announced that the game would be bundled with its upcoming Mega SG console, a high-end hardware simulation of the original Sega Genesis with added high-definition audiovisual features, set for release in April 2019.{{r|bundled with SG}} Due to licensing issues, the game will be retitled as Ultracore.[3]
