}}Uma Ramakrishnan is an Indian molecular ecologist working as an assistant professor at National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS), Bangalore where she works on conservation of endangered species in the Indian subcontinent. Today, her name is synonymous with tiger conservation in India.[1][2]She was the first person hired for the Ecology and Evolution department at NCBS. [1]

Early Life

Uma grew up in Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru, where her father was a physicist. She was introduced to nature very early in her life when she went on bird watching trips with the students of the Centre for Ecological Studies (CES) at IISc. [1]

She claims that she wasn’t the best student in her school but her parents always supported and encouraged her.[1]

Education

She followed her father to Princeton University after her schooling where he was a teacher. She realized she wanted to more on Ecology when she was working in a lab there studying a monkey species called Marmoset which introduced her to the use of molecular tools to study Biology and the behavior of organisms. Uma understood that Ecology is a quantitative science because of its advanced mathematical and statistical tools and complex data sets. So after she returned to Bengaluru, she did her Bachelor’s course in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Simultaneously, she worked at CES in a lab studying wasps. [1]

She spent a year doing her fieldwork on elephants at Periyar Reserve and Mudumalai Forest after her Masters in Biotechnology. [1]

Hence, she took a PhD from the University of California, San Diego on the topic population genetics and evolutionary history of mammals. She came back to India in 2005 after doing two years of postdoctoral work at Stanford University. [1][2]

Career

She joined NCBS in 2005 as an assistant professor. She was the first person hired for the Ecology and Evolution department at NCBS. [1] Her lab has developed methods to conduct population monitoring and landscape/population genetics with tiger fecal samples. [3]

Her previous projects include work on contrasting population structure between commensal and wild rodents, and understanding drivers of diversification in montane bird communities in the Western Ghats. [3]

She has worked with the noted tiger expert and director of Wildlife Conservation Society, K. Ullas Karanth. Since then she has been working to save the Tigers in India.[4]

She received the prestigious Parker-Gentry for her work on tiger genomes and is the first Indian to receive the award.[14]

She plans on investigating biodiversity in the Western Ghats, Himalayas and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
