Unique molecular identifiers (UMIs) are short sequences or molecular "tags"(not to be confused with "barcodes" which identify unique cells) added to each read in some next generation sequencing library preparation protocols. They serve to reduce the quantitative bias introduced by cDNA amplification, which is necessary to get enough reads for detection.[1] UMIs are especially useful for single cell RNA-Seq.[2]See alsoReferences[1][2]{{genetics-stub}} 1 : DNA sequencing |
