He is particularly well known for his studies of the caste system in South India. He is a Professor of Sociology at the Delhi School of Economics at the University of Delhi where he is Professor Emeritus of Sociology since 2003.[1] He was appointed National Research Professor by the Government of India in 2007.[2] He is a recipient of the Indian civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan.[3]Presently he is the Chancellor of North Eastern Hill University, Shillong, Meghalaya [4] and formerly of Ashoka University, in India.[5] Bibliography- Sociology: Essays on Approach and Method, Oxford University Press, 2002.
