It presumably takes its name from the Haughton River which forms its western boundary.[1] The river in turn was originally named after stockman Richard Houghton by pastoralist and explorer James Cassidy. However, it was renamed on 28 April 1950 to Haughton River at the request of the local residents and the Queensland Electoral Office.[3] References1. ^1 {{cite QPN|42303|Upper Haughton|locality in Shire of Burdekin|accessdate=18 November 2018}} {{Shire of Burdekin}}{{Queensland-geo-stub}}2. ^1 {{Census 2016 AUS|id=SSC32941|name=Upper Haughton (SSC)|accessdate=20 October 2018|quick=on}} 3. ^{{Cite QPN|15507|Haughton River|watercourse in the Shire of Burdekin|accessdate=21 November 2018}} 1 : Shire of Burdekin |
