HistoryAttala County was established in 1833, and Valena was one of its earliest settlements.[2][3] Valena was located on the east bank of the Big Black River, on the western part of a plantation owned by S.H. Clark.[4] The settlement prospered as a small trading center, and was a regular stopping point for flatboats on the river.[4] The first sawmill in the county was located there, as well as a blacksmith shop, a saloon, two or three stores, and a post office from 1837 to 1840.[3][5][6] Valena was abandoned before 1900.[2] References1. ^1 {{gnis|711031|Valena (historical)}} {{Attala County, Mississippi}}{{Mississippi-geo-stub}}2. ^1 {{cite web | title = Soil Survey of Attala County, Mississippi | publisher = United States Department of Agriculture | date = 2003 | url = https://www.nrcs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_MANUSCRIPTS/mississippi/attalaMS2003/Attala.pdf}} 3. ^1 {{cite book | last = Rowland | first = Dunbar | title = Mississippi: Comprising Sketches of Counties, Towns, Events, Institutions, and Persons, Arranged in Cyclopedic Form | publisher = Southern Historical Publishing Association | year = 1907 | url = https://archive.org/details/mississippicomp01rowlgoog | volume = 1 | page = 174}} 4. ^1 {{cite book | last = Rowland | first = Dunbar | title = Mississippi: Comprising Sketches of Counties, Towns, Events, Institutions, and Persons, Arranged in Cyclopedic Form | publisher = Southern Historical Publishing Association | year = 1907 | url = https://dcms.lds.org/delivery/DeliveryManagerServlet?dps_pid=IE97852 | volume = 2 | page = 847}} 5. ^{{cite web | title = Extinct Towns and Villages of Attala County, Mississippi | publisher = Mississippi Historical Society | date = 1902 | url = http://genealogytrails.com/miss/attala/extinct_towns.htm}} 6. ^{{cite web | title = Post Offices - Mississippi | publisher = Jim Forte Postal History | url = http://www.postalhistory.com/postoffices.asp?task=display&state=ms&county=&searchtext=&pagenum=175 | accessdate = December 21, 2016}} 2 : Former populated places in Attala County, Mississippi|Former populated places in Mississippi |
