The best known species is the bandy-bandy (V. annulata). SpeciesSix species are recognized as being valid.[1] In Mid 2018 a new species of bandy-bandy was discovered in Australia, visually nearly identical to Vermicella annulata. The species named Vermicella parscauda is considerably more venomous, with a toxin that is comparable to that of the red-bellied black snake (Pseudechis porphyriacus).[2]
Nota bene: A binomial authority in parentheses indicates that the species was originally described in a genus other than Vermicella.
