He is considered one of the top college recruits in the class of 2019.[1] High school careerCarey began playing high school basketball in 2015 with University School of Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Broward County, Florida. In his freshman season, he averaged 18.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks while leading the sharks to a 15–9 overall record. As a sophomore, Carey Jr averaged 22.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per game, while leading his team to a 20–7 record and a Florida district state championship. After his sophomore year, Carey was named the 2017 Miami Herald and sun sentinel sports all-district teams as well as 2017 MaxPreps All-American honorable mention. As a junior, he averaged 26.0 points and 10.1 rebounds a game, while leading the sharks to an overall record of 36–2, Florida 5A state championship, 2017 City of Palms Invitational and the 2017 John Wall Invitational which he led his team to the championship in both tournaments. Carey Jr led his team to the finals at the High School National Tournament despite losing to R.J. Barrett and Montverde Academy in the championship game.
