}}Vernon Carey Jr. (born February 25, 2001) is an American high school basketball player who attends NSU University School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He is considered one of the top college recruits in the class of 2019.[1]

High school career

Carey began playing high school basketball in 2015 with University School of Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Broward County, Florida. In his freshman season, he averaged 18.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks while leading the sharks to a 15–9 overall record. As a sophomore, Carey Jr averaged 22.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per game, while leading his team to a 20–7 record and a Florida district state championship. After his sophomore year, Carey was named the 2017 Miami Herald and sun sentinel sports all-district teams as well as 2017 MaxPreps All-American honorable mention. As a junior, he averaged 26.0 points and 10.1 rebounds a game, while leading the sharks to an overall record of 36–2, Florida 5A state championship, 2017 City of Palms Invitational and the 2017 John Wall Invitational which he led his team to the championship in both tournaments. Carey Jr led his team to the finals at the High School National Tournament despite losing to R.J. Barrett and Montverde Academy in the championship game. Carey Jr averaged 17.4 points and 5.3 rebounds per game on the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League (EYBL) Circuit for his AAU team, Nike Team Florida.[2] On December 6, 2018, Carey announced his commitment to attend Duke University and play for the Duke Blue Devils via Sportscenter after the one year anniversary on his grandfather's passing.[3][4]

Carey Jr is rated as a five-star recruit and considered one of the top players of the 2019 class.

Carey is the son of former NFL player Vernon Carey.[5]
