HistoryThe house was built in 1849 for Alexander Virden, a merchant from Delaware, and his wife, Ruth Anna Virden; they were second cousins.[2] It was designed in the Greek Revival architectural style.[2] During the American Civil War of 1861-1865, Virden served in the Confederate States Army.[2] After he died in 1892, his widow lived in the house until her death in 1916.[2] Their son, Samuel Virden, inherited the house in 1917, and he sold it to John W. Patton, Jr., in 1934.[2] The house has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since December 16, 1983.[3] References1. ^{{NRISref|version=2010a}} {{National Register of Historic Places}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Virden-Patton House}}{{Mississippi-NRHP-stub}}2. ^1 2 3 4 {{cite web|title=National Register of Historic Places Inventory--Nomination Form: Virden-Patton House|url=http://focus.nps.gov/GetAsset?assetID=f0a8efa4-3264-427f-a6e8-6d328ff7327c|website=National Park Service|accessdate=August 28, 2016}} 3. ^{{cite web|title=Virden-Patton House|url=http://focus.nps.gov/AssetDetail/NRIS/83003962|website=National Park Service|accessdate=August 28, 2016}} 4 : Houses on the National Register of Historic Places in Mississippi|Greek Revival architecture in Mississippi|Houses completed in 1849|Houses in Jackson, Mississippi |
