Established in 1998, its primary activity is to provide live audio descriptions of theatrical plays.[2] The organisation has subsequently worked with museums, galleries and heritage venues to deliver audio descriptions for exhibitions, as well as conducting research and training to increase disability-access to the arts.[3] The charity has worked with Open House London,[4] the Royal National Institute of Blind People,[5] and the Art Fund.[6] The 2012 London Beyond Sight campaign organised by VocalEyes recruited celebrities from London, such as Andrew Sachs, Alison Steadman and Barbara Windsor, to record audio descriptions of London landmarks so that they could be enjoyed by people who could not see them.[7] In 2013 the project won a Jodi Award, for the best use of digital technology in widening access for disabled people[8] and in 2016 the recordings were released under an open licence. On 8 October 2008, it set the Guinness World Record for the "largest audience for audio described theatre", one hundred and sixty-eight people, at a performance of Les Misérables at the Queen's Theatre, on Shaftesbury Avenue, in London.[9] References1. ^{{EW charity|1067245}} 2. ^{{cite web|url = http://www.vocaleyes.co.uk/page.asp?section=199§ionTitle=Our+History|title = Our History|publisher = VocalEyes|accessdate = 18 January 2016}} 3. ^{{cite web|url=http://culturehive.co.uk/resources/access-for-blind-and-partially-sighted-people-at-museums-galleries-and-heritage-sites|title=Access for blind and partially sighted people at museums, galleries and heritage sites|last=Pereira|first=Eulalia|year=2009|publisher=CultureHive|accessdate=19 January 2016}} 4. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.openhouselondon.org.uk/design/vocaleyes.html|title=Design for living|publisher=Open House London|accessdate=18 January 2016}} 5. ^{{cite web|url=http://audiodescription.co.uk/uploads/general/Talking_Images_Report_-_PDF_File_6.pdf|title=Museums, galleries and heritage sites: improving access for blind and partially sighted people|publisher=Audio Description Association|accessdate=19 January 2016}} 6. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.artfund.org/news/2015/05/20/vocaleyes-audio-guides-for-the-museum-of-the-year-finalists|title=VocalEyes audio guides for the Museum of the Year finalists|date=20 May 2015|publisher=Art Fund|accessdate=19 January 2016}} 7. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.lovecamden.org/london-beyond-sight|title=London Beyond Sight|publisher=Love Camden|accessdate=18 January 2016}} 8. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.museumsassociation.org/museums-journal/news/08042015-jodi-awards-shortlist-announced|title=Jodi Awards shortlist announced|publisher=Museums Association|accessdate=18 January 2016}} 9. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/world-records/largest-audience-for-audio-described-theatre|title=Largest audience for Audio Described Theatre|publisher=Guinness World Records|accessdate=18 January 2016}} External links{{Commons category|London Beyond Sight}}
