}}Vyner Street is both a cobblestone street and surrounding canalside locality next to Cambridge Heath in Bethnal Green, it is in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets within the East End of London, England. It was once called John Street in the 1830s.[1]

The street is known for street art,[2] and as having a number of art galleries.[3] It is composed of historic and new buildings that include warehouses dating from 1870 to 1950 alongside the Regents Canal.[4]

History

The warehouse buildings rose from the Regents Canal without a towpath to interrupt development, giving direct acces to the canal. While on Wadeson Street, a row of Victorian workshops were built,[5] in what was a historically a Jewish street, it was very overcrowded with 572 inhabitants who lived in 125 houses by the 1930s, it was then redeveloped into a warehouses and factories by 1937 due to easy access to the Regents Canal.[6]

Vyner Street had transformed into a hub of the East London art scene by 2005.[7] [8]

The Wilkinson Gallery opened 1998 on Cambridge Heath Road and had moved into Vyner Street in 2007, with the gallery becoming known for being one of the first in London to have exhibitions by major female artists, such as Joan Jonas, Dara Birnbaum, and Laurie Simmons.[9]

From 2005 to 2008 the EEL promoted and organized the Vyner Street festival with the Victory Pub, which was a two day family festival that featured local bands, artists and market traders with a different theme each year, with the Royal Air Force Red Arrows doing a impromptu flyover in 2008.[10]

But by 2012, many had moved out due to the effects of the Great Recession as well as the London 2012 Olympics.[8] In the same year, a documentary film was released titled 'Vyner Street' which was short observational piece about two different worlds living inconspicuously side by side in the same street.[11]

By 2017, Amanda and Anthony Wilkinson said they were dissolving their partnership for personal reasons and thus closing Wilkinson Gallery.[9] Nevertheless commercial galleries were starting to make a return, with the Stuart Shave Modern Art reopening in October 2017 and the Tungsten Gallery opening in January 2018. Fourthspace are working on a new studio and apartment building on Vyner Street for artists Michael Landy and Gillian Wearing.[12] Finnish designer Heikki Salonen announced a new menswear label called Vyner Street in the same year, named after Vyner Street where Salonen lives and works.[13]

Geography

Vyner Street is part of the wider Regents Canal Conservation Area, established in 2008, the streetside buildings seem neglected but form part of the industrial heritage and character of the street. To the south of Vyner Street is Wadeson Street, which contains a row of three storey Victorian workshops mostly converted to residential use. Both types contribute to the character of the area.[5]

Governance

Vyner Street is in the constituency of Bethnal Green and Bow and is represented by the Labour Party Rushanara Ali (since 2010) in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament.[14]

London overall has a directly elected executive Mayor of London, currently Sadiq Khan and the City and East seat in the London Assembly is held by Labour Party Unmesh Desai.

Transport

No London Buses routes operate on/in Vyner Street but do call on nearby Cambridge Heath Road and Mare Street, the 26, 48, 55, 106, 254, 388, D6 and night buses N26, N55, N253 respectfully. The D6 finishes and restarts near Ash Grove since 2014.[15]
