The sheet music cover was designed by E.E. Walton,{{citation needed|date=November 2018}} and features a young woman in a heart of red, white, and blue, flowers are gathered at her knees[3] It was written for voice and piano.[4][5][6] Initially the song was titled, "(Watch, Hope and Wait) Little Girl (Until I Come Back to You)." It was altered to the more positive title, "(Watch, Hope, and Wait) Little Girl ('I'm Coming Back to You')."[1]{{rp|99}} A version of the song was recorded on November 8, 1918, by tenor Charles H. Hart with conductor Josef Pasternack. It was released by Victor Records.[7] The lyrics' tone is positive and hopeful. A soldier is telling his girlfriend that "all the world looks bright." The war is over and he is returning home. He proclaims that "happy days" are in their near future, and even promises that wedding bells will soon ring. The chorus is as follows:[1]{{rp|378–379}} {{poemquote|Watch, little girl, and hope, little girl,And wait, little girl, for me; Smile, little girl, all the while, little girl, Though I'm across the sea. Give my love to ma, Say "hello" to pa; I'm not there but, dear, I know How overjoyed you are. It means, little girl, that our dreams, little girl, Are surely coming true; We have won, little girl, Our duty's done, little girl I'm coming back to you.}} The sheet music can be found at Pritzker Military Museum & Library.[8] References1. ^1 2 {{cite book |last1=Vogel |first1=Frederick G. |date=1995 |title=World War I Songs: A History and Dictionary of Popular American Patriotic Tunes, with Over 300 Complete Lyrics |location=Jefferson |publisher=McFarland & Company, Inc. |isbn=0-89950-952-5 |oclc=32241433}} 2. ^{{cite web |url=http://imagesearchnew.library.illinois.edu/cdm/ref/collection/myers/id/3102 |title=Watch, Hope and Wait Little Girl (I'm Coming Back to You) |publisher=University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign |access-date=19 February 2016}} 3. ^{{cite book |last=Parker |first=Bernard S. |year=2007 |title=World War I Sheet Music Vol 2. |location=Jefferson |publisher=McFarland & Company, Inc. |page=749 |isbn=0-7864-2799-X |oclc=71790113}} 4. ^{{cite web |url=http://levysheetmusic.mse.jhu.edu/collection/096/111a |title=(Watch Hope and Wait) Little Girl (I'm Coming Back to You) |publisher=Johns Hopkins University |access-date=13 November 2018}} 5. ^{{cite web |url=http://images.indianahistory.org/cdm/ref/collection/p16797coll1/id/1367 |title=Watch hope and wait little girl (I'm coming back to you) |publisher=Indiana Historical Society |access-date=19 February 2016}} 6. ^{{cite web |url=http://digital.gonzaga.edu/cdm/ref/collection/p15486coll3/id/53383 |title=Watch, hope and wait little girl: I'm coming back to you |publisher=Gonzaga University |access-date=19 February 2016}} 7. ^{{cite web |url=https://www.loc.gov/jukebox/recordings/detail/id/6847/ |title=Watch, hope, and wait, little girl (I'm coming back to you) |website=National Jukebox |publisher=Library of Congress |access-date=19 February 2016}} 8. ^"Watch, hope and wait little girl: I'm coming back to you" {{OCLC|20119906}} 3 : 1918 songs|Songs of World War I|Songs with lyrics by Lew Brown |
