His father did work involving vivisection for several years, which left a lasting impact and motivated him to become an animal rights activist. He also was influenced by Patty Mark, an Australian animal rights activist. [5] He has two dogs, Lisa and Oliver, and a cat named Joan. He rescued Oliver from Yulin, China, where Oliver was to be slaughtered at the Yulin dog meat festival. [6] EducationHsiung graduated from the University of Chicago in 2001 and received a National Science Foundation graduate fellowship to study economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, but went on leave after his first year to pursue a JD/PhD.[7] He attended the University of Chicago law school with a focus on behavioral law and economics.[8] After graduating, Hsiung taught at Northwestern's Pritzker School of Law as a visiting assistant professor for one year. As a lawyer, Hsiung was involved in environmental advocacy and studied behavioral economics, studying with economics scholars including Eric Posner and Mark Duggan.[9] He partnered with behavioral law and economics scholar Cass Sunstein to write an analysis of the effect of climate change on nonhuman animals.[3] Direct Action EverywhereAt DxE, Hsiung helped organize a resurgence of grassroots protest in the animal rights movement focused on animals raised for food, unlike earlier anti-fur and anti-vivisection campaigns. Hsiung helped organize a campaign around Chipotle restaurants, accusing Chipotle of "humane washing."[10] In January 2015, Hsiung organized an "open rescue"/"investigation" on a Certified Humane egg farm in Petaluma, California. In the "investigation" Hsiung, and Direct Action Everywhere protesters, broke into the egg farm and extensively recorded video of the chicken barns, which they claimed highlighted animal abuses such as confines that were far too small, preening from stress, and lack of water.[11] He helped to lead several other investigations, including a highly rated Whole Foods turkey ranch, dog meat farms in Yulin, China, and a cage-free Costco egg supplier.[12][13] Hsiung has also been a part of several high-profile protests, most notably a disruption of a San Francisco Giants-LA Dodgers baseball game in September 2016 that led to him being tackled by Giants player Angel Pagan on national TV.[14] He was also a high-profile spokesman for a series of protests at Bernie Sanders rallies during the 2016 Democratic Presidential Primary over the candidate's support for the dairy industry and refusal to support animal rights against the interests of animal agriculture.[15] On April 24, 2018, he was arrested and charged with "threatening bodily injury" in Boulder, CO at Whole Foods after asking questions at the company about the source of its meat products. Musician Moby posted a video questioning whether Whole Foods was "support[ing] an unconstitutional police state wherein people aren’t allowed to ask questions."[16] In May 2018, Hsiung, and a large number of Direct Action Everywhere protesters entered a Santa Rosa Egg Farms facility, rescued chickens who were dying and in need of veterinary treatment, and recorded extensive video that they claimed illustrated corruption and systematic animal abuses.[17] Another large-scale open rescue occurred on September 29, 2018, when activists attempted to rescue injured and dying chickens at Petaluma Poultry in Petaluma. Also, on December 16, 2018 a large-scale protest occurred at Ray Mar Farms in Oakdale, California. Activists protested the facility against inhumane and abusive conditions faced by thousands of baby cows trapped in veal crates. They previously documented the abuses at the facility, and in an investigatory report published by the Intercept, they found many calves taken away from their mothers and kept in crates where they couldn’t turn around, were standing in their own feces, and also images of dead piles of animals who died of diseases, due to neglect. After release, activists continue to protest against police unlawfulness, despite the activists having the right to the open rescue under California penal law code statue 597E, Doctrine of Necessity. [18] Hsiung claimed that what he was doing was legal, carrying a folder with the "opinion of a scholar" inside, which he showed to the owners and the employees of the facility when they demanded him and the protesters leave.[19] The opinion asserts that a portion of California law, 597E, which allows people to rescue animals that are trapped in a dangerous environment (such as a dog or cat in a burning building), also allows Hsiung to legally break into farms that Direct Action Everywhere believes are mistreating animals. The opinion has not yet been tested in court.
