The film marks Zagar's first narrative feature film. The film stars Evan Rosado, Raúl Castillo, Sheila Vand, Isaiah Kristian, and Josiah Gabriel.[2][3] It premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival[4] and was released on August 17, 2018, by The Orchard.[5] PremiseJonah grows up with rambunctious brothers in a working class mixed-race family in upstate New York, and he must contend with both his volatile father and his emerging sexuality.[6] ProductionThe film was shot on grainy 16mm film and includes colored pencil animated sequences.[7] The cinematographer, Zak Mulligan, said "there was a lot of effort to create [a] feeling of intimacy" and noted that much of the film was shot at child's-eye-height. The actors who played the brothers and parents lived together during production so they would feel like a real family.[8] The director, Jeremiah Zagar, involved the novel's author Justin Torress throughout the process, saying Torress "was on the set, and he read every draft of the script...He was even in the editing room".[9] Cast
ReceptionCritics compared the film to Moonlight and Tree of Life and variously called it impressionistic, intimate, woozy, and evocative.[7] On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 91% based on 74 reviews, with an average rating of 7.8/10. The website's critical consensus reads, "Dreamlike and haunting, We the Animals approaches the coming-of-age odyssey with a uniquely documentarian eye."[10] On Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating to reviews, the film has a weighted average score of 83 out of 100, based on 25 critics, indicating "universal acclaim".[11] The film won the Sundance NEXT Innovator Award[12] and was nominated for five 2019 Independent Spirit Awards.[13] References1. ^{{cite web|title=We the Animals |url=https://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=wetheanimals.htm |website=Box Office Mojo |publisher=IMDb |accessdate=November 16, 2018}} 2. ^{{Cite news|url=https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/review/we-animals-review-sundance-2018-1075931|title='We the Animals': Film Review {{!}} Sundance 2018|last=Rooney|first=David|date=January 20, 2018|work=The Hollywood Reporter|publisher=Prometheus Global Media|access-date=July 8, 2018}} 3. ^{{Cite news|url=https://variety.com/2018/film/news/sundance-we-the-animals-1202683237/|title=Sundance Award Winner ‘We the Animals’ Sells to The Orchard (Exclusive)|last=Setoodeh|first=Ramin|date=January 31, 2018|work=Variety|publisher=Penske Business Media|access-date=July 8, 2018|last2=Lang|first2=Brent}} 4. ^{{Cite web|url=https://www.sundance.org/projects/we-the-animals#/|title=We the Animals|website=Sundance Film Festival|publisher=The Sundance Institute|access-date=July 8, 2018}} 5. ^{{Cite news|url=https://www.indiewire.com/2018/06/we-the-animals-trailer-jeremiah-zagar-1201979503/|title=‘We the Animals’ Exclusive Trailer: Jeremiah Zagar Channels ‘The Tree of Life’ and ‘Moonlight’ in Sundance Winner|last=Sharf|first=Zack|date=June 28, 2018|work=IndieWire|publisher=Penske Business Media|access-date=July 8, 2018}} 6. ^{{cite web |url=https://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/we-the-animals-2018 |title=We the Animals |last=O'Malley |first=Sheila |date=August 17, 2018 |website=RogerEbert.com}} 7. ^1 {{cite web |url=https://variety.com/2018/film/reviews/we-the-animals-review-1202908700/ |title=Film Review: ‘We the Animals’ |last=Zagar |first=Jeremiah |date=August 17, 2018 |website=Variety}} 8. ^{{cite web |url=https://vmagazine.com/article/zak-mulligan-on-we-the-animals-success/ |title=Zak Mulligan On "We the Animals" Success |last=Rosenzweig |first=Mathias |date=August 29, 2019 |website=V Magazine|}} 9. ^{{cite web |url=https://filmschoolrejects.com/independent-spirit-awards-we-the-animals-jeremiah-zagar-interview/ |title='We the Animals' Director Jeremiah Zagar Talks Open Collaboration and the Independent Spirit Awards |author= |date=February 7, 2019 |website=Film School Rejects}} 10. ^{{Cite web|url=https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/we_the_animals/|title=We the Amimals (2018)|publisher=Fandango Media|work=Rotten Tomatoes|accessdate=August 27, 2018}} 11. ^{{Cite web|url=http://www.metacritic.com/movie/we-the-animals|title=We the Animals Reviews|publisher=CBS Interactive|work=Metacritic|accessdate=August 17, 2018}} 12. ^{{cite web |url=http://www.sundance.org/projects/next-innovator-award-we-the-animals |title=NEXT Innovator Award — We the Animals|website=Sundance Institute}} 13. ^{{cite press release |author= |title=Film Independent Spirit Awards 2019 Nominees |url=https://s3.amazonaws.com/PressReleasesSA/2019_SA_NomineeOnesheet_120618.pdf |publisher=Film Independent|}} External links
