The Wet Hot American Summer series is an American satirical comedy film and two Netflix series' directed by David Wain and written by Wain and Michael Showalter. The series features an ensemble cast, including Janeane Garofalo, Molly Shannon, Paul Rudd, Christopher Meloni, Michael Showalter (and various other members of MTV's sketch comedy group The State), Elizabeth Banks, Ken Marino, Michael Ian Black, Bradley Cooper, Amy Poehler, Zak Orth, David Hyde Pierce and A. D. Miles. The film takes place during the last full day at a fictional summer camp in 1981, and spoofs the sex comedies aimed at teen audiences of that era. The first Netflix series was a prequel to the film focusing on the first day of camp in 1981. The second Netflix series sees the camp counselors return to Camp Firewood 10 years later, as originally planned in the final scene of the 2001 film.

Wet Hot American Summer (2001)

{{Main|Wet Hot American Summer}}

In 1981, Camp Firewood, a summer camp located near Waterville, Maine, is preparing for its last day of camp. Counselors have one last chance to have a romantic encounter with another person at Camp Firewood. The summer culminates in a talent show. Beth (Janeane Garofalo), the camp director, struggles to keep her counselors in order—and her campers alive—while falling in love with Henry (David Hyde Pierce), an astrophysics associate professor at Colby College. Henry has to devise a plan to save the camp from a piece of NASA's Skylab, which is falling to Earth.

Coop (Michael Showalter) has a crush on Katie (Marguerite Moreau), but has to pry her away from her rebellious boyfriend, Andy (Paul Rudd). Only Gene (Christopher Meloni), the shell-shocked Vietnam war veteran and camp chef, can help Coop win Katie—with some help from a talking can of mixed vegetables (voiced by H. Jon Benjamin). Gary (A.D. Miles) and J.J. (Zak Orth) attempt to figure out why McKinley (Michael Ian Black) hasn't been with a woman, the reason being that McKinley is in love with Ben (Bradley Cooper). Victor (Ken Marino) attempts to lose his virginity with the resident loose-girl Abby (Marisa Ryan) and Susie (Amy Poehler) and Ben attempt to produce and choreograph the greatest talent show Camp Firewood has ever seen.

Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp (2015)

In 1981 at Camp Firewood it is now the first day of camp, and the camp counselors first meet. The series builds to the camp putting on a stage play called 'Electro City', while Beth and Gene take on sinister government forces and Andy and the other Counselors take on their Camp Tiger Claw rivals. The series features new arrivals; Chris Pine as Eric, a reclusive musician; Jon Hamm as The Falcon, a hired assassin; Kristen Wiig as Courtney, a snobby Camp Tigerclaw counselor; Josh Charles as Blake McCarthy, a Camp Tigerclaw counselor and Katie’s boyfriend; and Lake Bell as Donna Berman, Coop’s love interest.

Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later (2017)

{{Main|Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later}}

In 1991 the former camp counselors come back to Camp Firewood for a reunion. The series sees Mitch (the can of Mixed Vegetables) and Gene team up to try to stop President Ronald Reagan (Michael Showalter) from Buying and subsequently Nuking Camp Firewood. Victor attempts to finally lose his virginity, to give Donna and Yaron (David Wain) a baby. Ben (now played by Adam Scott) and McKinley now have a child and to attend the reunion have to hire a nanny, Renata (Alyssa Milano), who may just be a knife wielding psychopath. Andy has a challenger for the 'King of Camp' hall of fame, known as Deegs (Skyler Gisondo), who he must defeat.

Future

Creators David Wain and Michael Showalter have hinted that there could be future installments in the Wet Hot American Summer series, including possibly setting the show in the Winter of 1980 or a 25-year reunion where the Actors actually play their own ages. Showalter said "...if we keep doing it at this rate, we’ll actually be our own age. Like, next time we do Wet Hot, it’ll be like, their 25th reunion, and then we’re just our actual ages or something."[1]
