词条 | Wilfred Bagwell Purefoy |
释义 |
The eldest son of Colonel Edward Bagwell-Purefoy of the Greenfields estate, County Tipperary,[3] Wilfred Bagwell-Purefoy was educated at Harrow School and then at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. On 10 May 1882 he joined the 3rd King's Own Hussars and served for six years with the rank of lieutenant. He resigned from the army to start a stud farm at Greenfields, County Tipperary.[2] He was the director of the Autostrop Safety Razor Company, a competitor of Gillette.[4] He collected rare orchids and was interested in gardening and natural history, but his introduction to the British Isles of exotic plants and insects was denounced by naturalists.[5] Bagwell-Purefoy is chiefly remembered as one of a group of five gamblers who formed the Druid’s Lodge confederacy. The gamblers owned Hackler's Pride, winner of the Cambridgeshire Handicap in 1903 and again in 1904, yielding them a spectacular payoff.[6][7][8] References1. ^{{cite web|title=Lieutenant Wilfred Bagwell-Purefoy|website=thepeerage.com|url=http://www.thepeerage.com/p26543.htm#i265429}} {{DEFAULTSORT:BagwellPurefoy, Wilfred}}2. ^1 {{cite journal|title=Purefoy, Wilfred Bagwell|journal=Who's Who|year=1919|page= 2020|url= https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.39015047639912;view=1up;seq=2062}} 3. ^In the 1870s Colonel Edward Bagwell Purefoy owned 7,607 acres in County Tipperary. {{cite web|title=Estate: Bagel Purefoy|website=Landed Estates Database, NUI Galway|url=http://landedestates.nuigalway.ie/LandedEstates/jsp/estate-show.jsp?id=3352}} 4. ^{{cite book|author=Holland, Annie|title=Little Book of Horse Racing|year=2014|publisher=The History Press|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=WFATDQAAQBAJ&pg=PT69}} 5. ^{{cite book|author=Desmond, Ray|year=1994|publisher=CRC Press|title=Dictionary of British and Irish Botanists and Horticulturalists|page=33|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=thmPzIltAV8C&q=bagwell#v=snippet&q=bagwell&f=false}} 6. ^{{cite newspaper|author=Buckley, Will|title=Why best-laid plans don't always pay|newspaper=The Guardian|date=2 October 2004|url=https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2004/oct/03/horseracing.willbuckley}} 7. ^{{cite book|title=The Druid's Lodge Confederacy: The Gamblers Who Made Racing Pay|edition= revised edition of 1990 original|author=Mathieu, Paul|year=2015|publisher=Racing Post Books}} 8. ^{{cite web|author=Cormack, David|title=Review of The Druid's Confederacy by Paul Mathieu|website=theracingforum.co.uk|date=31 March 2015|url=https://theracingforum.co.uk/racing-articles/871357/}} 6 : 1862 births|1930 deaths|People educated at Harrow School|Graduates of the Royal Military College, Sandhurst|British Army officers|British racehorse owners and breeders |
