Broecke was born in Mechelen as the brother of the painters Crispin van den Broeck and Hendrick van den Broeck and is known for his decorations of the Antwerp City Hall. Like his brothers he is often referred to as Paludanus, and is also known by the title Guillelmus Paludanus.[2] His self-portrait as a wax-modeller is in the Kunsthistorisches Museum. He worked in Spain from 1571 to 1573.[2] Broecke died in Antwerp. A relief by his hand is in the collection of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, Brussels.[3] It was originally installed in his house De Liefde, built in 1567 on the Korte Vaartstraat in Antwerp.[4] References1. ^Sometimes also written Broecke. {{Netherlands-sculptor-stub}}{{Authority control}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Broecke, Willem van den}}2. ^1 Willem van den Broecke in the RKD 3. ^artwork record in the museum 4. ^artwork record in the Web Gallery of Art 4 : 1530 births|1580 deaths|People from Mechelen|Flemish sculptors |
