McCaffrey (October 9, 1914-February 13, 2006) was a United States Army Lieutenant General.[1] Early life and educationHe started at West Point in 1935 graduating as a Second Lieutenant in 1939.[1] Military serviceWorld War IIHe served as chief of staff of the 92nd Infantry Division.[1] Korean WarHe served as deputy chief of staff X Corps.[2] He assumed command of the 31st Infantry Regiment when its commander was killed in the Battle of Chosin Reservoir and led them in the retreat to Hungnam.[1] He served as Commandant of the United States Army War College from 15 September 1967 to 6 July 1969.
