He was the son of William and Ann Person. He moved with his parents to Granville County (later became Bute County and now Warren County), North Carolina. Then, he was elected member of the first four Provincial Congresses in North Carolina in 1774, 1775, and 1776. He was also a justice of the peace of Bute County.[2] He married Martha Eaton on September 2, 1759 in Granville County, Province of North Carolina. William died in 1778 in Bute County, North Carolina.[2] Revolutionary War serviceOn September 9, 1775, the Provincial Congress appointed William as a colonel and commander of the Bute County Regiment, subordinate to the Halifax District Brigade under Brigadier Allen Jones of the North Carolina militia. He resigned his commission in April 1776. He was replaced by Colonel Philemon Hawkis, Jr. The Bute County Regiment ceased to exist on January 30, 1779, since Franklin and Warren counties were created from Bute county and they both had regiments of militia.[1] References1. ^1 {{cite web|url=http://www.carolana.com/NC/Revolution/patriot_leaders_nc_william_person.html|author=Lewis, J.D.|title=The American Revolution in North Carolina, William Person|accessdate=March 19, 2019}} {{DEFAULTSORT:Person, William}}2. ^1 2 3 {{cite web|title=Dictionary of North Carolina Biography, Vol 5, page 75|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=VeSDB5tKDagC&pg=PA75&lpg=PA75&dq=William+Person+Bute+County&source=bl&ots=0qneWXKo-l&sig=_E0J5ozF_kw4Zdbkc65eFmzdwDs&hl=en&sa=X&ei=UysZUrf2Cs-n4AOUq4GQDQ&ved=0CCkQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=William%20Person%20Bute%20County&f=false|editor=Powell, William S.|year=1994|accessdate=March 19, 2019}} 3. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.ncpedia.org/biography/person-william|title=William Person|accessdate=March 19, 2019|author=Skinner, Sue Dossett|year=1994}}, there are some variations in the birth and death dates in this reference 4 : North Carolina militiamen in the American Revolution|People from Warren County, North Carolina|1734 births|1778 deaths |
