Jenkins Architecture, Design, and Art Library is one of multiple locations serving the University of Houston Libraries system. It is housed within the University of Houston’s Hines College of Architecture located in the northern part of campus, and is along the western wall of the 1st floor in room 106. The library was established in 1986 upon the completion of the College of Architecture. The library’s collection initially was a merger of the central library’s art and design books combined with the previous College of Architecture building’s collection.[1] Architects Philip Johnson and John Burgee were the lead designers of the building. In 1989 the library was officially named after William R. Jenkins in memory of his passing.[2] Additionally, Sally Walsh was the interior designer for the library and the College of Architecture.[3] The Architecture, Design, and Art Library’s collection comprises over 120,000 volumes and approximately 190 current journal titles. The library serves the entire UH system, with emphasis placed on the students and faculty belonging to the Hines College of Architecture and the School of Art, and receives approximately 92,000 visits annually.[4] In addition to the library’s books and journals, there is a small collection of DVDs, VHSs, Lego Architecture models, and a View-Master which are available to check out. Furthermore, the library participates in the Interlibrary Loan program, which allows patrons to request resources from a vast network of libraries and have them delivered to their local library for pickup. The library contains three main sections: the general collection, journals, and rare books. The general collection is located throughout the main hall of the library. The journal room holds all back issues of periodicals, which have been bound for protection and preservation, as well as the library’s video collection. Housed inside the library is the Kenneth Franzheim II Rare Books Room, which contains over 1,500 rare or unique books, journals, and pamphlets on fine art and design, as well as the personal libraries of Franzheim and John F. Staub.[5] Some of these items date back to the 1600s, and are one-of-a-kind articles. Additionally, the library offers both Windows and Apple computers for use by students, staff, and faculty, as well as printing, scanning, and copying machines which are located on the second floor of the library. There are group study spaces in the south wing and the mezzanine, along with individual study carrels in the lower mezzanine. Additionally, a study space for students working towards their Master’s in Art History is located at the back of the mezzanine in room M169 and contains 7 study carrels.[6] In 2008, Hurricane Ike hit the Texas Gulf Coast causing much destruction throughout the Houston area. The University of Houston suffered from a variety of damage, and the hurricane tore off a portion of the College of Architecture’s roof.[7] This resulted in the library being closed for major renovations during the fall semester, as well as losing a small portion of the collection.
