Rev Prof William Stevenson DD FRSE FSA(Scot) (1805–1873) was a 19th-century Scottish minister and antiquarian who served as professor of Ecclesiastical History at Edinburgh University.

Life

He was born at Barford in Lochwinnoch on 26 October 1805. He trained as a minister for the Church of Scotland and in 1835 became minister of Arbroath.

From 1844 to 1861 he was minister of South Leith Parish Church, living then at 14 Hermitage Place facing Leith Links.[1] Edinburgh University awarded him an honorary doctorate (DD) during his time at Leith.

In 1858 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh his proposer being James Young Simpson. In 1861 he was created Professor of Ecclesiastical History at Edinburgh University.[2]

He retired in the summer of 1872 and died at home, 37 Royal Terrace on Calton Hill on 14 June 1873.[3]

Family

His wife, referred to as "Mrs William Stevenson" outlived him and continued living at 37 Royal Terrace.[4]
