He was the fourth and youngest son of architect Thomas Turnbull.[1] He joined his father's practice in 1882 and became a partner in 1891.[2] He was born in San Francisco where his father was working at the time.[3] He moved to New Zealand with his family in 1871.[3] In his younger years, he played rugby union at Poneke Football Club in Kilbirnie.[4] Turnbull designed a large house including three rooms to hold a library for bibliophile Alexander Turnbull (no relation) in 1914. The outbreak of World War I caused the construction to be delayed until late 1915, with Alexander Turnbull moving in the following year. Turnbull House was used as a library until 1973, and the collection formed the nucleus of the national library collection.[5] Turnbull House is listed by Heritage New Zealand as a Category I heritage building.[6] Turnbull moved to his son's house in Willis Street when he was old, and he died there on 22 June 1941,[7] aged 73.[4] He was buried at Karori Cemetery.[8] His wife had died 18 months before him. He was survived by four sons and four daughters.[4] Gallery of his workReferences{{Commons category|William Turnbull (New Zealand architect)}}1. ^{{DNZB|Cochran|Chris|2t54|Thomas Turnbull|11 March 2016}} {{authority control}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Turnbull, William}}{{NewZealand-architect-stub}}2. ^{{Cite book|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=GkThQYLb3ZUC|title=Directory of British Architects, 1834-1914: Vol. 2 (L-Z) |last=Brodie |first=Antonia |last2=Library |first2=British Architectural |last3=Architects |first3=Royal Institute of British |date=20 December 2001 |publisher=A&C Black |isbn=9780826455147}} 3. ^1 {{Cite web|url=http://nzetc.victoria.ac.nz/tm/scholarly/tei-Cyc01Cycl-t1-body-d4-d30-d2.html#Cyc01Cycl-fig-Cyc01Cycl0545a|title=Municipal, Professional, And Commercial {{!}} NZETC|website=nzetc.victoria.ac.nz|access-date=11 March 2016}} 4. ^1 2 {{cite news |title=Obituary |url=http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&cl=search&d=EP19410623.2.90 |accessdate=11 March 2016 |work=The Evening Post |volume=CXXXI |issue=146 |date=23 June 1941 |page=9}} 5. ^{{cite web | url=http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/wellington-kapiti/places/wellington-central-area/turnbull-house/ | title=Turnbull House | publisher=Department of Conservation | accessdate=28 January 2016}} 6. ^{{NZHPT|232|Turnbull House|28 January 2016}} 7. ^{{cite news |title=Deaths |url=http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&cl=search&d=EP19410623.2.4 |accessdate=11 March 2016 |work=The Evening Post |volume=CXXXI |issue=146 |date=23 June 1941 |page=1}} 8. ^{{cite web |url=http://wellington.govt.nz/services/community-and-culture/cemeteries/cemeteries-search/details?id=66427&serviceType=Burial |title=Cemeteries search |date= |website= |publisher=Wellington City Council |accessdate=12 March 2016}} 6 : 1868 births|1941 deaths|19th-century New Zealand architects|People from Wellington City|20th-century New Zealand architects|Burials at Karori Cemetery |
