The reservoir's inflow and outflow are from and to the Colorado River. The confluence of the Fraser River and the Colorado River is about a mile upstream from the reservoir. A diversion dam creates the reservoir. A nearby pumping station sends water from the reservoir to Lake Granby, six miles away, where it is then pumped over the mountains to the Front Range.[1] The project is able to divert about 48,000 acre-feet of water per year, chiefly during the snowmelt season from April to July.[2] Wildlife viewingThe Windy Gap Watchable Wildlife Area lies on the north side of the reservoir and provides parking and picnic tables.
