The speedway opened on July 16, 1933, and operated until 1936.[1][2] The track was described as "the World’s Most Unique Automobile Race Course."[3][2] Wolf Lake Speedway contained two tracks. One track was a {{convert|1|mi|km|adj=on|spell=in}} sand track that was completely surrounded by Wolf Lake.[3][1][2] A portion of the lake was drained to allow for the track's construction.[3] This track hosted auto racing, while speedboat racing was held in the lake in the vicinity of the track.[2] The other was a {{convert|1/5|mi|km|adj=on}} dirt and oil surfaced midget track, constructed in 1935, located between Wolf Lake and Calumet Avenue.[1][2] Midget car racing took place at this track,[4] with the opening race on June 9, 1935,[5] and races continuing until 1936.[6] Among the drivers who raced at Wolf Lake Speedway were Emil Andres,[4] Frank Brisko,[7] Duke Nalon,[8] Harold Shaw,[2] Jimmy Snyder,[5] and Tony Willman.[2] In 1935, Wolf Lake Speedway hosted a series of weekly Amateur Athletic Union boxing matches.[9][10][11] References1. ^1 2 {{cite news |last = Kalwasinski |first = Stan |url = http://www.nwitimes.com/sports/motor-sports/region-motor-sports-hammond-tracks-part-of-racing-s-past/article_40b23fab-6747-50d1-b8f4-a1496efdb42d.html |title = Region Motor Sports: Hammond Tracks Part of Racing's Past |work = The Times of Northwest Indiana |date = July 17, 2014 |access-date = July 11, 2017 }} {{Indiana-sports-venue-stub}}2. ^1 2 3 4 5 6 {{cite news |url = http://www.kalracing.com/autoracing/Wolf_Lake_Speedway.htm |title = Wolf Lake Speedway |work = Chicagoland Auto Racing |access-date = July 11, 2017 }} 3. ^1 2 {{cite news |last = Dorsey |first = Kathleen |url = http://www.nwitimes.com/news/special-section/100objects/wolf-lake/article_bf3f704e-0023-5a22-aba7-6229c89034f4.html |title = Wolf Lake |work = The Times of Northwest Indiana |date = July 30, 2014 |access-date = July 11, 2017 }} 4. ^1 {{cite news |title = A Strong Field Set for Midget Races |work = The Hammond Times |date = August 14, 1935 |at=p. 20}} 5. ^1 {{cite web |last = Kalwasinski |first = Stan |url = http://www.kalracing.com/autoracing/jimmy_snyder_biography.htm |title = Jimmy Snyder |work = Chicagoland Auto Racing |access-date = July 11, 2017 }} 6. ^{{cite news |url = http://archives.chicagotribune.com/1936/07/26/page/28/article/wolf-lake-speedway-to-hold-midget-races-today |title = Wolf Lake Speedway to Hold Midget Races Today |work = Chicago Tribune |date = July 26, 1936 |at= pt. 2 p. 6 |access-date = July 11, 2017 }} 7. ^{{cite news |title = Brisko Races Sunday Night With Midgets |work = The Hammond Times |date= June 20, 1935 |at=p. 11}} 8. ^{{cite news |url=https://newspaperarchive.com/hammond-times-aug-15-1935-p-8/|title = New Pilots in Friday Races |work = The Hammond Times |date = August 15, 1935 |at=p. 8 |access-date=July 27, 2018}} 9. ^{{cite news |title = Boxing Bouts Attract Crowd |work = The Hammond Times |date = August 14, 1935 |at=p. 20}} 10. ^{{cite news |title = Eight Bouts on Wolf Lake Card Wednesday Eve |work = The Vidette-Messenger |date = August 20, 1935 |at=p. 6}} 11. ^{{cite news |title = 8 Great Bouts on Wolf Lake Card Tonight |work = The Hammond Times |date = August 21, 1935 |at=p. 13}} 8 : 1933 establishments in Indiana|1936 disestablishments in Indiana|Defunct boxing venues in the United States|Defunct motorsport venues in the United States|Demolished sports venues in Indiana|Hammond, Indiana|Boxing venues in Indiana|Sports venues completed in 1933 |
