}}World Lethwei Championship (also known as WLC) is a Lethwei promotion based in Yangon, Myanmar.[2] It was founded in August 2015 by Zaykabar Company Vice-Chairman Zay Thiha and investors.[3][4]

As a subsidiary of Lekkha Moun Co, WLC entered into a partnership with the ONE Championship mixed martial arts promotion to share fighters.[5]

History

World Lethwei Championship was launched on August 2015. It was announced that the organisation plans to combine world-class lethwei action with live entertainment, including a DJ, enticing fighter entrances and dancers.[6]

It signed top Lethwei fighters Tun Tun Min[7] & Too Too, to exclusive contracts. It also offered exclusive contracts to Thway Thit Win Hlaing, Ye Tagon and Phoe Thaw and signed international fighters Eddie Farrell[8] and Umar Semata.[9]

The first WLC event, titled WLC1: The Great Beginning, was held on 3 March 2017 at Mingalardon Event Zone in Mingaladon Township, Yangon, Myanmar.[10][11]

World Lethwei Championship signed a broadcast deal with international broadcaster Canal+[12] for international broadcast rights in Myanmar and UFC Fight Pass [13] for international video-on-demand rights.

Rules

WLC does not use traditional Lethwei rules, it uses a modified ruleset, with judges and no injury timeouts.

Rounds

Each bout can be booked as a 3, 4 or 5 round fight with 3 minutes per round and a 2-minute break in between rounds. Championship bouts are 5 round fights with 3 minutes per round and a 2-minute break between rounds.

Judging

In the event that a bout goes the distance, it will go to the judges decision. The 3 judges will score the bout based on number of strikes per round. Fighters have a maximum of 3 knockdowns per round and 4 knockdowns in the entire fight before the fight is ruled a knockout.

Events

WLC 1: The Great Beginning

WLC 1:The Great Beginning was the inaurugral World Lethwei Championship event and took place on 3 March 2017 at Mingalardon Event Zone.[14][15] The area was the re-purposed driving range of Mingalardon Country Club and was specially built for the event.[16] This event is considered the biggest lethwei event in history.[17][18]

The weigh-ins for the event were held in Kandawgyi Park in Yangon.[19]

The headline fight featured TunTun Min against British kickboxer Nicholas Carter.[20] TunTun Min won the fight via knockout in the first round.[21][22][23][22]

WLC 2: Ancient Warriors

WLC 2: Ancient Warriors took place on 10 June 2017 in Thuwunna Stadium.[25] The event featured a main-event bout between Soe Lin Oo and Polish kickboxer Artur Saladiak.[26][27][28][29] Brent Bolsta was originally scheduled to compete at the event[30] but was involved in a motorcycle accident five days before the event.[31]

Artur Saladiak outpointed Soe Lin Oo in the main event to earn a decision win, becoming the first foreign fighter to defeat Soe Lin Oo.[32] In the co-main event, Too Too beat James Benal in a close decision. It was also announced that Too Too will take on multiple-time Australian Muay Thai champion Michael Badato in WLC3 for the Middleweight World Lethwei Championship.[33]

WLC 3: Legendary Champions

WLC3: Legendary Champions took place on 4 November 2017 in Thuwunna Indoor Stadium.[34] The main event produced the first Middleweight Lethwei World Champion in a bout between kickboxing champion Michael Badato and top lethwei fighter Too Too. [35][36]

After a hard-fought five round battle, it was Too Too who emerged victorious to claim the Middleweight Lethwei World Championship. ONE Middleweight World Champion Aung La N Sang also made a special appearance at the event.

WLC4: Barekunckle-King

WLC4: Barekunckle-King took place on 17 February in Wunna Theikdi Indoor Stadium in Myanmar's capital, Naypitaw.[38][39] Too Too defended his title for the first time[40][41] and retained his Middleweight World Lethwei Championship title winning by unanimous decision over Ukraine's Vasyl Sorokin.[42]

WLC5: Knockout War

WLC5: Knockout War took place on June 2 in Wunna Theikdi Indoor Stadium in Myanmar's capital, Naypitaw.[44][45] Artur Saladiak and Saw Ba Oo contested the main event for the Light Middleweight World LethweiChampionship. [46] Artur Saladiak defeated Saw Ba Oo by knockout to become the first Light Middleweight World Lethwei Champion.[47]

WLC6: Heartless Tigers

WLC6: Heartless Tigers marked the reurn of World Lethwei Championship for the first time in 2018. It was held in Thuwunna Indoor Stadium, Yangon, Myanmar on 29 September .[48][49] Soe Lin Oo made his WLC return against Zhao Wen Wen of China in the main event. [50] Soe Lin Oo defeated Zhao Wen Wen by knockout in the second round.[51]

WLC7: Mighty Warriors

WLC7: Mighty Warriors marked the promotion's first event in Myanmar's 2nd largest city, Mandalay[52]. It was held in Mandalar Thiri Indoor Stadium.[53] It was the first event to be broadcast internationally on UFC Fight Pass.[54] The main event crowned the first Light Welterweight World Lethwei Champion in a battle between Saw Htoo Aung and Antonio Faria, which Antonio Faria won by 2nd round knockout [55]
