WROZ was an independent television station located in and licensed to Owensboro, Kentucky. The station was owned by Nashville, Tennessee-based Powers Communications, Inc. The station broadcast its signal on UHF channel 61.

History

Previous attempts to sign on a television station were unsuccessful as the construction permit for WPMJ channel 48 was expired before that station could even go on air.[1]

WROZ's construction permit was issued by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in 1987. The station signed on in January 1988 as Owensboro's first and only locally licensed commercial broadcast station.[2]

All other television stations receivable in Owensboro (except for now-defunct WAZE-TV) are based in Evansville, Indiana as Owensboro has always been within the Evansville media market, although the area could also get at least rimshot coverage from ABC affiliate WBKO of Bowling Green. WBKO was also available on cable television in Owensboro during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s.

Throughout its life on the air, WROZ had been an independent outlet, hence it never was successful.[3] Most of its programming were barter syndicated, including a mix of old comedies, cartoons, and old movies. The station signed off the air permanently in 1990 due to financial problems and failed carriage agreements with local cable providers. By 1991, the station's broadcasting license was deleted by the FCC. KET satellite station WKOH-TV is currently the only over-the-air broadcast television station that is actually licensed in Owensboro, although it transmits from a tower in nearby Henderson.
