In period 1943—44 commander of this Corps was Paul Bader.{{sfn|Mitcham Jr.|2006|p=110}} In period between 1 August 1944 and 29 April 1945 the commander of this Corps was Ernst Von Leyser.{{sfn|Mitcham, Jr.|2010|p=296}} Leyser was succeeded by the last commander of this Corps, Gdl Hartwig von Ludwiger, who was put on the trial after WWII and hanged in 1947.[1] At the beginning of November 1944 the XXI Mountain Corps retreated from Albania to Podgorica in Montenegro.{{sfn|Pajović|1977|p=518}} In mid-November they tried to break through Danilovgrad and Nikšić toward Sarajevo, but Yugoslav communist forces who were supported by two British artillery batteries stopped them after ten days fighting.{{sfn|Pajović|1977|p=518}} At the end of November 1944 they had to retreat through a much longer route, via Kolašin, Prijepolje and Višegrad.{{sfn|Pajović|1977|p=518}} References1. ^{{cite book|last=MacLean|first=French L.|title=Quiet Flows the Rhine: German General Officer Casualties in World War II|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=aKOwAAAAIAAJ|year=1996|publisher=J.J.
