Youth Justice Coalition (YJC) is a Los Angeles-based non-profit organization focused on juvenile justice and criminal legal reforms. YJC is a non-profit organization devoted to challenging race, gender and class inequality in California’s juvenile and criminal justice systems. Advocacy positionsGang injunctionsYJC has been a part of movement to challenge the impact of gang injunctions on young people in minority communities.[1] YJC was successful in blocking an injunction in the Imperial Courts Housing Projects in the early 2000s.[1] New jail constructionIn 2015, YJC was part of a coalition that opposed the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors 2 billion dollar jail expansion project.[2] Kim McGill from YJC argued for mental health programs in the community instead of jail for the mentally ill.[2] Police shootingsIn 2014, YJC published a report on police-involved homicides.[3] YJC petitioned Kamala Harris to appoint special prosecutors for police-involved homicides.[3] In 2015, YJC organized a "Die In" protest at the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors building. About 400 protestors carried cardboard coffins to represent the killings by police officers.[4] School searchesYJC has protested Los Angeles Unified School District search policies, including LAUSD’s Random Metal Detector Search Policy, arguing that these policies erode trust between students and school staff.[5] YJC is a part of the "Students Not Suspects" campaign, aligning with the American Civil Liberties Union, Black Lives Matter, Public Counsel and others.[6] References1. ^1 {{Cite news|url=https://www.dailybreeze.com/2013/09/14/activists-and-law-enforcement-square-off-over-gang-injunctions/|title=Activists and law enforcement square off over gang injunctions|date=2013-09-14|work=Daily Breeze|access-date=2018-02-26|language=en-US}} 2. ^1 {{Cite news|url=https://www.scpr.org/news/2017/09/26/76050/la-activists-mount-new-effort-to-block-mental-heal/|title=Activists mount new effort to block downtown LA mental health jail|last=Radio|first=Southern California Public|date=2017-09-26|work=Southern California Public Radio|access-date=2018-02-26}} 3. ^1 {{Cite news|url=https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/kwpj8v/is-obedience-the-only-way-to-avoid-police-brutality-915|title=Is Obedience the Only Way to Avoid Police Brutality?|date=2014-09-15|work=Vice|access-date=2018-02-26|language=en-us}} 4. ^{{Cite news|url=https://www.dailynews.com/2015/04/08/los-angeles-marchers-carry-617-mock-coffins-to-protest-police-brutality/|title=Los Angeles marchers carry 617 mock coffins to protest police brutality|date=2015-04-08|work=Daily News|access-date=2018-02-26|language=en-US}} 5. ^{{Cite news|url=https://www.scpr.org/news/2018/02/02/80425/how-a-shooting-at-lausd-s-middle-school-fits-into/|title=Castro incident sheds fresh light on LAUSD's security policy|last=Radio|first=Southern California Public|date=2018-02-02|work=Southern California Public Radio|access-date=2018-02-26}} 6. ^{{Cite web|url=https://knock-la.com/constituents-demand-an-end-to-random-searches-in-lausd-98e05847d27a|title=LAUSD’s Failed Metal Detector Policy|last=Ferlito|first=Dahlia|date=2018-01-11|website=KNOCK|access-date=2018-02-26}} External links
