BackgroundAfter the failure of the Disk, Zbrojovka was determined that its next car design would be a success. The company had a new engineering team that included the talented František Mackrle and he designed two new designs, both named Z 26, with different engine sizes.[1] The Board liked the more powerful version, but required the prototype to undergo rigorous testing, including driving over {{convert|9200|km|abbr=off}} across Europe, crossing the Dolomite and Alps and driving as far as Hamburg.[2] The car passed the tests and entered production as the 4/18 or Z 18 in 1925. DesignThe Z 18 had a rectangular frame with rigid axles.[2] The water cooled, two stroke two cylinder engine drove the rear wheels through a three speed gearbox. It had a bore of {{convert|80|mm|in|frac=6|abbr=on}} and stroke {{convert|100|mm|in|frac=6|abbr=on}}, capacity of {{convert|1004|cc|in3|abbr=on}} and a Zenith carburettor.[3] The standard car was fitted with 730 x 130 disc wheels, although more expensive versions had Rudge-Whitworth wire wheels. The basic body style was a four seat phaeton which cost 35,000 Kčs in 1926. It was open-top with a single door on the left, steering wheel on the right and a bench seat that was accessed by lowering the left front seat.[1] In September 1926, a limousine version was launched at the Prague Motor Show at a price of 40,500 Kčs. This had a fixed roof with four side windows and more equipment, including an electric cigar lighter and coat hanger. A sports roadster was also available, priced at 45,000 Kčs. Gradually over time, two and four door phaetons, landaulets and other custom designs were added to the range.[1] There was also a pickup truck capable of carrying a {{convert|500|kg|lb|abbr=on}} payload.[4] PerformanceThe Z 18 could reach a top speed of {{convert|80|kph|mph|abbr=on}} and had a typical fuel consumption of between {{convert|10|and|11|l/100km|abbr=on}}.[1] Production2510 vehicles, including 1000 commercial vehicles, were sold between 1926 and 1930.[4] References1. ^1 2 3 {{cite journal|last=Tuček|first=Jan|title=Automobil Z 18 – První Zetka|date=12 January 2018|journal=Automobil|url=https://www.automobilrevue.cz/rubriky/automobily/historie/automobil-z-18-prvni-zetka_45323.html|accessdate=30 March 2018|language=Czech}} 2. ^1 {{cite book|first=Jan|last=Tuček|title=Auta první republiky: 1918-1938|year=2017|place=Prague|publisher=Grada|pages=90–93}} 3. ^{{cite web|first=Zdeněk|last=Patera|title=Z 18 Faeton, Československo 1926 (1926-1930)|url=https://auta5p.eu/katalog/zbrojovka/z18_02.php|accessdate=30 March 2018}} 4. ^1 {{cite book|first=Adolf|last=Kuba|title=Atlas našich automobilů 1914-1928 | place=Prague|publisher=NADAS|year=1988|pages=149–154}} 3 : Cars introduced in 1926|Cars of the Czech Republic|Rear-wheel-drive vehicles |
