Early life

Lights was born in the West Midlands region of England in 1984, and attended The University of Reading. She graduated in 2005, and is studying for an MSc in Science Communication at the University of the West of England. As a child Lights showed proficiency for English, which led to an appearance on Junior Mastermind and her first poem being published in an anthology at the age of 12.

Career

Lights has written a nonfiction book titled The Ultimate Guide to Green Parenting (2015) published by New Internationalist Publications.[2] In 2018 Lights released her first poetry collection, Only a Moment.

Lights is an outspoken science advocate and skeptic: in 2015 the Western Morning News newspaper reported that Zion is against pseudoscience.[3] In 2018 Lights did a TEDx [4] talk on astronomy at The University of Bristol.

In August 2015, Lights was dubbed 'Britain's greenest mother' by The Daily Telegraph newspaper.[5] In September 2015 Lucy Siegle writing in The Observer called Lights 'an eco pragmatist, happily heavily on evidence'.[6]

Lights is a well-known environmental activist and writer with a focus on ethical parenting and climate change. In 2018 she appeared on the television programme Good Morning Britain where she debated banning balloons for environmental reasons with the show's presenters and Countryfile presenter Tom Heap.[7] The Daily Mail newspaper reported on Lights's appearance on the show, and a follow up interview appeared on Love Sport Radio.

Lights had her first poem published in an anthology at the age of 12. Her poetry has appeared in various publications including the Tolpuddle Special of Citizen 32 magazine alongside Tony Benn and Benjamin Zephaniah, in Musings, a poetry collection collated to raise funds for La Leche League GB,[8] and most recently in the collection A Nightingale Sang alongside Patrick Barkham, a limited poetry edition created for New Networks for Nature.[9]

In 2013 Lights appeared on the cover of Breastfeeding Matters magazine. She was also a columnist for the Express & Echo newspaper for six months in 2014.[10]
