Early life"My mom is Caucasian [and has] Irish-English roots from Ohio," Chao says about her ancestry. "My dad is Chinese. My grandmother moved to Michigan from China when she was 7, pre-Cultural Revolution." Additionally, Chao has one sister.[1] Chao has also stated that she grew up in a family of visual arts.[2] She received her BA in Art History from Brown University and her MFA in Acting from UC San Diego.[3] CareerChao has participated in theatre productions, like La Jolla Playhouses' Sideways, Surf Report, and WoW Festivals' Our Town. Additionally, she appeared in Ensemble Theatre Company's Amadeus. Chao has worked alongside directors Christopher Guest, Les Waters, Ping Chong, and Chris Ashley. Chao has also starred in her own TV series The God Particles, of which she wrote and produced. Chao co-produced the 2017 short Like Animals.
