}} Ülo Altermann; (Russian: Юло Альтерманн) was an Estonian soldier in the German army during World War II. He served in the 20th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS (1st Estonian). After the war he became a resistance fighter against the Russian occupation. BiographyAltermann was born October 5, 1923 in Paide Parish, Estonia, and graduated from a rural school, He worked in a factory before the war. After Estonia's annexation to the USSR and the subsequent occupation of Estonia by the German army, Estonian volunteers were accepted into the German Army. He joined the Waffen-SS, into a Estonian volunteer unit. He studied at the military camp of Heide, then was sent to the front. He fought near Narva, on the Tannenberg front and on the Blue Hills near Tallinn. After the German retreat, the Estonian volunteers in their army fled into the woods.Despite the amnesty announced in 1946, he was afraid to return home. and remained with the restance, known as the "forest brothers" After some time, he left the resistance group and returned to work, but letters began to come asking him to come for an interrogation. In the fall of 1946, the NKVD searched his house inr, and soon Altermann again fled into the forest. He served in the detachment "Oregon", and led a large group of people who were called the "Ülo Altermann Group". According to the NKVD, Hulot's detachment was hiding in the village of Koeru, Paide Parish. The "Brothers" under his command were distinguished by high moral qualities and excellent discipline. Continuing their resistance,into the 1940s, they blasted a monument to Lenin n the town of Määküla in 1953. In the spring of 1954, Altermann's detachment was ambushed.
