Historyİzmir was an important port of the Ottoman Empire and the first quay was constructed in 1869. The harbor was constructed between 1954 and 1959.[2]Its first operator was Turkish State Railways. In 1960 it was acquired by DenizBank ( a state owned bank responsible for maritime business) In 1989 it was handed back to State Railways. In 2007 it was privatized. But because of legal reasons the privatization was halted. In 2018 the harbor infrastructure was included in the Turkey Wealth Fund.[3]Technical detailsThe total land area is {{convert|635000|m2}}.[4] The total quay length is {{convert|3386|m}}. With this length the quay serves for 18 ships.The average depth is {{convert|11|m}}.[5] BusinessAccording to 2004 figures, the number of marine vessels which visit the harbor is 2389 freight and 1246 passenger ships. The total trading size in the same year was 12.5 million tonnes.
