The fall was observed by the Koenigsberg Observatory. Since the meteorite fell near inhabited areas during winter, it was rather easy to locate the fragments in the snow.[2] In total, 20 fragments with a combined weight of {{convert|42.2|kg}} were collected and donated to the Vytautas Magnus University. The largest pieces weighted {{convert|7258|and|7080|g}}.[2] Two other fragments were gifted later – {{convert|36.6|g}} and {{convert|1840|g}} – to the Institute of Geology and Geography in Vilnius.[6] There were also reports of a {{convert|10|kg}} fragment found about {{convert|3|km}} from Žemaitkiemis in 1938.[7] More pieces likely fell into the {{ill|Kliepšiai Lake|lt|Kliepšių ežeras}} or were kept by the locals.[2]
The main mass, two largest fragments and 13 other fragments, are held by the Geology Museum of Vilnius University.[9] Other fragments are held by: {{convert|2.1|kg}} by the National Museum in Prague, {{convert|1.1|kg}} by the Russian Academy of Science, {{convert|636|g}} by the Natural History Museum in London, {{convert|69|g}} by the National Museum of Natural History in Paris,[10] {{convert|33|g}} by the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, {{convert|13.9|g}} by the Geological Survey of Canada, and others.[1]
On 14 July 2017, President Dalia Grybauskaitė approved a coat of arms of Žemaitkiemis that features the meteorite fall.[12]
