It has been thought of as a subgenus of Ammonoceratites. Argonauticeras produced an evolute shell with a trapezoidal whorl section, slightly impressed inner rim (or dorsum), a somewhat flattened outer rim (venter) and broadly arched sides, covered with fine, weakly crinkled ribs.
