Lamiids Icacinales Metteniusales Garryales Gentianales Solanales Boraginales Vahliales Lamiales Campanulids Aquifoliales Escalloniales Asterales Bruniales Apiales Paracryphiales Dipsacales }} In the APG IV system (2016) for the classification of flowering plants, the name asterids denotes a clade (a monophyletic group).{{r|apgiv}} Common examples include the forget-me-nots, nightshades (including potatoes, eggplants, tomatoes, peppers and tobacco), the common sunflower, petunias, morning glory and sweet potato, coffee, lavender, lilac, olive, jasmine, honeysuckle, ash tree, teak, snapdragon, sesame, psyllium, garden sage, table herbs such as mint, basil, and rosemary, and rainforest trees such as Brazil nut. Most of the taxa belonging to this clade had been referred to the Asteridae in the Cronquist system (1981) and to the Sympetalae in earlier systems.{{citation needed|date=September 2011}} The name asterids (not necessarily capitalised) resembles the earlier botanical name but is intended to be the name of a clade rather than a formal ranked name, in the sense of the ICBN. PhylogenyThe phylogenetic tree presented hereafter has been proposed by the APG IV project.{{r|apgiv}} {{Clade |style=font-size:100%;line-height:110%;|label1=asterids |1={{Clade |1= Cornales |2={{Clade |1= Ericales |label2=euasterids |2={{Clade |label1=campanulids |1={{clade |1=Aquifoliales |2={{clade |1=Asterales |2=Escalloniales |3={{clade |1=Bruniales |2={{clade |1=Apiales |2={{clade |1=Dipsacales |2=Paracryphiales }} }} }} }} }} |label2=lamiids |2={{clade |1=Icacinales |2={{clade |1=Metteniusales |2={{clade |1=Garryales |2={{clade |1=Boraginales |2=Gentianales |3=Vahliales |4=Lamiales |5=Solanales }} }} }} }} }} }} }} }} HistoryGenetic analysis carried out after APG II maintains that the sister to all other asterids are the Cornales. A second order that split from the base of the asterids are the Ericales. The remaining orders cluster into two clades, the lamiids and the campanulids. The structure of both of these clades has changed in APG III.{{r|apgii}}{{r|apgiii}} In APG III system, the following clades were renamed: euasterids I → lamiids euasterids II → campanulids{{r|apgii}}{{r|apgiii}} References1. ^{{Cite journal |last=Angiosperm Phylogeny Group |year=2009 |title=An update of the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group classification for the orders and families of flowering plants: APG III |journal=Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society |volume=161 |issue=2 |pages=105–121 |doi=10.1111/j.1095-8339.2009.00996.x }} [1][2]2. ^{{Cite journal |last=Angiosperm Phylogeny Group |year=2016 |title=An update of the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group classification for the orders and families of flowering plants: APG IV |journal=Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society |volume=181 |issue=1 |pages=1–20 |doi=10.1111/boj.12385 }} }} External links{{Commons category|Asterids}}
