The fronds are variable in length, generally 30 to 75 centimeters long but occasionally over a meter in length. They have alternately arranged, subdivided pinnae. The spore-bearing sori on the undersides of the fertile pinnae are variable in shape, being "oblong, hooked, J-shaped, or horseshoe-shaped".[3] This is a commonly cultivated fern, especially A. niponicum var. pictum. It thrives in many kinds of shady garden conditions and produces thick colonies of gray-green fronds with reddish midribs.[5] 'Pictum' is also considered to be a cultivar; varieties and cultivars are bred to achieve midribs in many shades of red.[6] A. niponicum var. pictum has gained the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit.[7]as has the cultivar ‘Silver Falls’.[8] References1. ^{{Cite book|url=http://www.forest.go.kr/kna/special/download/English_Names_for_Korean_Native_Plants.pdf |title=English Names for Korean Native Plants |publisher=Korea National Arboretum |year=2015 |isbn=978-89-97450-98-5 |location=Pocheon |pages=369 |access-date=26 January 2017 |via=Korea Forest Service |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20170525105020/http://www.forest.go.kr/kna/special/download/English_Names_for_Korean_Native_Plants.pdf |archivedate=25 May 2017 }} 2. ^[https://www.itis.gov/servlet/SingleRpt/SingleRpt?search_topic=TSN&search_value=897585#null Athyrium niponicum.] Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS). 3. ^1 Anisocampium niponicum.
