Axwell House (also Axwell Hall) is a mansion house and Grade II* listed building, situated at Axwell Park, Blaydon, Tyne and Wear. An early manor house on the site was acquired by James Clavering, a merchant adventurer of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1629 for £1700.[1] In 1758 his descendant Sir Thomas Clavering replaced the house with a substantial mansion and assisted architect James Paine (1712–1789) in the Palladian design of the new house.[2] The hall was converted for use as the Newcastle Ragged School in 1920.[3] Having stood empty, neglected and deteriorating the property was acquired in 2005 by property developers for restoration and conversion to residential apartments.[4] References1. ^National Archives: Durham Record Office, Clavering Family Papers Ref D/CG7/14-16 {{TyneandWear-struct-stub}}2. ^Structures of the North East {{webarchive |url=https://web.archive.org/web/20060526204327/http://sine.ncl.ac.uk/view_image.asp?digital_doc_id=4350 |date=May 26, 2006 }} 3. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.twsitelines.info/smr/4993|title=Axwell Hall - sitelines.newcastle.gov.uk|work=twsitelines.info|accessdate=4 April 2015}} 4. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-east-news/historic-hall-set-reopen-1580686|title=Historic hall is set to reopen|author=nechronicle Administrator|date=23 June 2005|work=nechronicle|accessdate=4 April 2015}} 2 : Grade II* listed buildings in Tyne and Wear|Country houses in Tyne and Wear |
