HistoryThe term was coined during the Reformation. The Oxford English Dictionary cites the earliest usage to John Knox in his 1554 pamphlet, A Faythfull Admonition to the Professors of God's Truth in England. [11] It was used in the King James Bible in Jeremiah's plea to Israel to drop its "faithless" or "wayward" habits in order to resume a relationship of loyalty to God (Jeremiah 3:22).[10] See also
