The Ikki were mobs of peasants, commoners, monks and low-ranking samurai who revolted out of a desire to improve their social standing by threatening to overthrow the daimyo. In December 1536, Nagao Tamekage set out from the castle of Kasugayama to fight against the Ikkō-ikki of Kaga Province. They met in battle at a place called Sendanno, in Etchū Province. There, Tamekage was defeated and killed, along with many other Nagao clan warriors. Tamekage's son, known as Terutora, was not present at the battle, but would later become the famous Uesugi Kenshin.[1][2] References1. ^{{Cite book |last=Turnbull |first=Stephen |title=The Samurai Sourcebook |publisher=Cassell & Co. |year=1998 |ISBN=1854095234 |page=209}} {{coord missing|Japan}}{{Japan-battle-stub}}2. ^{{Cite book |last=Sato |first=Hiroaki |title=Legends of the Samurai |publisher=Overlook Duckworth |year=1995 |ISBN=9781590207307 |pages=210–213}} 3 : 1536 in Japan|Battles of the Sengoku period|Conflicts in 1536 |
