Ben Steinbauer is an American film director, based in Austin, Texas. Steinbauer is well known for his 2010 documentary feature, Winnebago Man.[1] The film follows the Internet phenomenon created by a series of twenty-year-old outtakes from a Winnebago sales video featuring the profane outbursts of the salesman, Jack Rebney. Originally intended as an inside joke, the video spread across the globe and earned Jack the title of "The Angriest Man in the World". The documentary explores the story of the clip’s origin and how it affects the man who never knew it existed. The film had its world premiere at The South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, on March 14, 2009.[2][3] Winnebago Man was released theatrically by Kino Lorber in the US and by Kinosmith in Canada in July 2010. Michael Moore called it “One of the funniest documentaries ever made!” Roger Ebert named it one of his favorite films of 2010. Steinbauer has directed many short documentaries including 3 Vimeo Staff Picks - Heroes From the Storm, Calls To Okies: The Park Grubbs Story and the New York Times Op-Doc, Slow To Show. Other short documentaries include Siren Song, The Superlative Light, Brute Force, The Next Tim Day and Smile and the World Smiles With You. He directed 8 episodes of the CBS show Pink Collar Crimes and 6 episodes of the Emmy award-winning PBS series Stories of the Mind. He co-owns the Emmy award-winning production company, The Bear. Founded in 2007 with writer/director, Berndt Mader, The Bear is a full service production company whose credits include 6 feature films Prince Avalanche (directed by David Gordon Green), Winnebago Man (directed by Steinbauer), Booger Red (directed by Mader), 5 Time Champion (directed by Mader), Double Play (directed by Gabe Klinger) and Slacker 2011 (directed by Steinbauer and Mader and various other Austin based directors). The Bear’s commercial clients include Yeti, Whole Foods Market, Crate & Barrel, Shiner Beer, Alfa Romeo and Dodge. Steinbauer is a proud alum of The University of Kansas film program, holds an MFA from The University of Texas at Austin, was named by Texas Monthly as one of Texas’ directors to watch and was the recipient of the prestigious Princess Grace Award for filmmaking.[4] Steinbauer appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno in 2010 and in the 2013 documentary film Rewind This! about the impact of VHS on the film industry and home video.
