It belongs to the genus Bidens, collectively called koko{{okina}}olau or ko{{okina}}oko{{okina}}olau in the Hawaiian language. It is found only in dry forests in the Wai{{okina}}anae Range on O{{okina}}ahu. It is threatened by habitat loss due to the spread of invasive weeds and brushfires.
