He served as the head football coach at Memphis State University—now known as the University of Memphis—from 1958 to 1971, compiling a record of 91–44–1. Murphy's 1963 team was the school's first undefeated team in 25 years, and Murphy was named national coach of the year. Murphy was also the athletic director at Memphis State from 1966 to 1981. He played college football at Mississippi State University. Murphy met all eligibility requirements and was on the 2007 College Football Hall of Fame ballot, but was ultimately not selected for induction. He died in a retirement community in Memphis, Tennessee in 2008.[1][2] Head coaching record{{CFB Yearly Record Start | type = coach | team = | conf = | bowl = | poll = both }}{{CFB Yearly Record Subhead| name = Memphis State Tigers | conf = NCAA College Division independent | startyear = 1958 | endyear = 1959 }}{{CFB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | year = 1958 | name = Memphis State | overall = 4–5 | conference = | confstanding = | bowlname = | bowloutcome = | ranking = | ranking2 = }}{{CFB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | year = 1959 | name = Memphis State | overall = 6–4 | conference = | confstanding = | bowlname = | bowloutcome = | ranking = | ranking2 = }}{{CFB Yearly Record Subhead | name = Memphis State Tigers | conf = NCAA University Division independent | startyear = 1960 | endyear = 1967 }}{{CFB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | year = 1960 | name = Memphis State | overall = 8–2 | conference = | confstanding = | bowlname = | bowloutcome = | ranking = | ranking2 = }}{{CFB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | year = 1961 | name = Memphis State | overall = 8–2 | conference = | confstanding = | bowlname = | bowloutcome = | ranking = | ranking2 = }}{{CFB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | year = 1962 | name = Memphis State | overall = 8–1 | conference = | confstanding = | bowlname = | bowloutcome = | ranking = | ranking2 = }}{{CFB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | year = 1963 | name = Memphis State | overall = 9–0–1 | conference = | confstanding = | bowlname = | bowloutcome = | ranking = 14 | ranking2 = }}{{CFB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | year = 1964 | name = Memphis State | overall = 5–4 | conference = | confstanding = | bowlname = | bowloutcome = | ranking = | ranking2 = }}{{CFB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | year = 1965 | name = Memphis State | overall = 5–5 | conference = | confstanding = | bowlname = | bowloutcome = | ranking = | ranking2 = }}{{CFB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | year = 1966 | name = Memphis State | overall = 7–2 | conference = | confstanding = | bowlname = | bowloutcome = | ranking = | ranking2 = }}{{CFB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | year = 1967 | name = Memphis State | overall = 6–3 | conference = | confstanding = | bowlname = | bowloutcome = | ranking = | ranking2 = }}{{CFB Yearly Record Subhead | name = Memphis State Tigers | conf = Missouri Valley Conference | startyear = 1968 | endyear = 1971 }}{{CFB Yearly Record Entry | championship = conference | year = 1968 | name = Memphis State | overall = 6–4 | conference = 4–0 | confstanding = 1st | bowlname = | bowloutcome = | ranking = | ranking2 = }}{{CFB Yearly Record Entry | championship = conference | year = 1969 | name = Memphis State | overall = 8–2 | conference = 4–0 | confstanding = 1st | bowlname = | bowloutcome = | ranking = | ranking2 = }}{{CFB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | year = 1970 | name = Memphis State | overall = 6–4 | conference = 2–2 | confstanding = 3rd | bowlname = | bowloutcome = | ranking = | ranking2 = }}{{CFB Yearly Record Entry | championship = conference | year = 1971 | name = Memphis State | overall = 5–6 | conference = 2–1 | confstanding = T–1st | bowlname = Pasadena | bowloutcome = W | ranking = | ranking2 = }}{{CFB Yearly Record Subtotal | name = Memphis | overall = 91–44–1 | confrecord = 12–3 }}{{CFB Yearly Record End | overall = 91–44–1 | bowls = no | poll = two }} References1. ^http://www.espn.com/college-football/news/story?id=3258031 {{Memphis Tigers football coach navbox}}{{Memphis Tigers athletic director navbox}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Murphy, Billy Jack}}{{1950s-collegefootball-coach-stub}}2. ^{{cite web |url=http://www.gotigersgo.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/022108aaa.html |title=Long-time Former Head Football Coach and Athletic Director Billy J.
