Taxonomy and systematicsPrior to 2015, the western whistler was considered as a subspecies of the Australian golden whistler until recognized as a separate species.[1] Some other authorities still consider it to be a subspecies of a wide-ranging golden whistler, but strong published evidence in favour of either treatment is limited, and further study is warranted to resolve the complex taxonomic situation.[2] SubspeciesFive subspecies are recognized:[3]
DescriptionThe males of the Bismarck whistler are white-throated unlike the yellow-throated males of the oriole whistler (P. orioloides) to the south-east.[2] References1. ^{{Cite web|url=http://www.worldbirdnames.org/updates/species-updates/|title=Species Updates « IOC World Bird List|website=www.worldbirdnames.org|language=en-US|access-date=2017-02-03}} {{Taxonbar|from=Q1923235}}2. ^1 Boles, W.
