The dam is located approximately {{convert|9|mi|km|1}} west of Orland. At full pool, the lake is {{convert|7|mi|km|1}} long and has a shoreline of {{convert|40|mi|km|1}} and a surface area of {{convert|4460|acre|km2|0}}. The dam and lake were constructed for flood protection for local towns and agricultural lands.
