It is monotypic within the genus Neolestes. For many years, some authorities considered the genus to belong to the bushshrike or shrike families due to shape and plumage similarities until a review of molecular genetic relationships in 1999 confirmed the behavioural and morphological affinities to Pycnonotidae.[2] The black-collared bulbul is found in equatorial Africa in its natural habitat of dry savanna.[1] References1. ^1 {{Cite journal | author = BirdLife International | title = Neolestes torquatus | journal = The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species | volume = 2016 | page = e.T22713256A94367717 | date = 2016 | url = http://www.iucnredlist.org/details/22713256/0 | doi = 10.2305/IUCN.UK.2016-3.RLTS.T22713256A94367717.en | access-date = 13 January 2018}} 2. ^{{Cite journal|last=Zuccon|first=Dario|last2=Ericson|first2=Per G.
