Nocturnal, terrestrial and solitary, it feeds on seeds, fruit and some leaves and insects. It is threatened by habitat loss for mining and agriculture. PhylogenyMorphological characters and mitochondrial cytochrome b DNA sequences showed that P. chrysaeolus belongs to the so-called trinitatus group of Proechimys species, and shares closer phylogenetic affinities with the other members of this clade: P. trinitatus, P. mincae, P. guairae, P. poliopus, P. magdalenae, P. urichi, and P. hoplomyoides.[3][4][5][6] {{cladogram|title=Species-level cladogram of the genus Proechimys. |caption=The cladogram has been reconstructed from morphological characters and mitochondrial DNA (cytochrome b) sequences.[3][4][5][6] |align=center |clades={{Cladogram of Proechimys species}} }} References1. ^{{IUCN2008|assessor=Tirira, D.|assessor2=Boada, C.|assessor3=Weksler, M.|assessor4=Anderson, R.
